Why In-Clinic Diagnostics Matter for Your Pet's Health

Why In-Clinic Diagnostics Matter for Your Pet's Health

When your pet is unwell, time matters. The ability to run diagnostic tests and obtain results during the same appointment – rather than waiting days for results from an external laboratory – can make a meaningful difference in how quickly we identify the problem and begin treatment. That is why in-clinic diagnostics are a cornerstone of the care we provide at Fernwood Veterinary Clinic.

What In-Clinic Diagnostics Means for You and Your Pet

In-clinic diagnostics simply means that we have the equipment and expertise to perform a wide range of tests right here at the clinic, during your pet's visit. Instead of drawing blood and sending it away, or referring you elsewhere for imaging, we can often complete the full diagnostic workup in one appointment.

This matters for several reasons:

  • Faster answers – results in minutes or hours, not days
  • Earlier treatment – we can begin appropriate therapy the same day
  • Less stress for your pet – fewer trips, fewer car rides, fewer unfamiliar environments
  • Better coordination – our team can interpret results in real time and adjust the plan as needed

As one of our clients, Jessica, shared: the team communicated her dog's treatment plan clearly, and she particularly appreciated the follow-up calls. That kind of seamless communication starts with having the diagnostic information we need, when we need it.

Digital Radiography

Our digital radiography system produces high-resolution images with lower radiation exposure than traditional film X-rays. Images are available immediately, which means we can assess your pet's condition during the appointment rather than asking you to wait or come back.

Digital X-rays are invaluable for evaluating:

  • Bone fractures and joint disease
  • Heart and lung conditions
  • Abdominal organ size and shape
  • Foreign body ingestion
  • Dental disease (with our full-mouth dental radiography capability)

Because images are digital, we can easily share them with specialist colleagues when a referral or second opinion is needed.

Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS)

Ultrasound gives us a real-time, non-invasive view of your pet's soft tissues and internal organs. It is well-tolerated by most patients and does not require anaesthesia in most cases. We use point-of-care ultrasound for:

  • Abdominal assessment – evaluating the liver, spleen, kidneys, bladder, and intestinal tract
  • Fluid detection – identifying abnormal fluid accumulations in the chest or abdomen
  • Cardiac screening – a preliminary look at heart structure and function
  • Guided sampling – using ultrasound to guide needle placement for fluid collection or tissue sampling

POCUS is particularly valuable in urgent situations where we need a rapid assessment to guide immediate treatment decisions.

Comprehensive Laboratory Testing

Our in-house laboratory allows us to run a broad range of blood and urine tests:

  • Complete blood count (CBC) – evaluates red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets to screen for infection, anaemia, clotting issues, and more
  • Biochemistry panels – assess organ function, including liver enzymes, kidney values, blood glucose, and electrolytes
  • Urinalysis – provides information about kidney function, hydration, urinary tract infections, and metabolic conditions like diabetes
  • Thyroid testing – especially important for cats, where hyperthyroidism is a common condition in middle-aged and senior patients
  • Heartworm and tick-borne disease testing – essential screening for pets at risk
  • Parvovirus testing – rapid results for suspected cases in young, unvaccinated dogs

For tests that require specialised analysis, we work with external reference laboratories and typically receive results within 24 to 48 hours.

In-House Microscopy

Our microscopy capabilities allow us to examine samples on-site for rapid assessment:

  • Skin and ear cytology – identifying bacteria, yeast, mites, or abnormal cells from skin scrapes and ear swabs
  • Fine needle aspirates – examining cells collected from lumps or masses to help determine whether further investigation is needed
  • Urine sediment – looking for crystals, bacteria, or cells that may not show up on standard urinalysis
  • Faecal analysis – screening for intestinal parasites through flotation and direct smear techniques
  • Blood smear evaluation – assessing cell morphology when blood count results are abnormal

When Are Diagnostics Recommended?

Diagnostics are not just for sick pets. We use them across a range of scenarios:

  • Annual wellness exam – Baseline blood work, faecal screening
  • Pre-surgical screening – CBC, biochemistry, organ function
  • Acute illness or injury – Blood work, X-rays, ultrasound
  • Senior wellness (bi-annual) – Comprehensive blood panel, urinalysis, thyroid, blood pressure
  • Monitoring chronic conditions – Targeted blood work (e.g., kidney values, thyroid levels)

What Happens With the Results?

We do not just run tests – we interpret them in the context of your pet's history, physical exam findings, and clinical signs. Our team will walk you through the results, explain what they mean in plain language, and discuss the recommended next steps. If further testing or specialist referral is warranted, we coordinate that process for you.

The Value of Early Detection

Many of the conditions we diagnose through routine blood work – kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, liver disease – are highly manageable when caught early. The earlier we establish a baseline and identify trends, the more options we have for treatment and the better the outcome for your pet.

If your pet is due for their annual wellness blood work, or if you have noticed changes in behaviour, appetite, energy, or weight, diagnostic testing can give us the answers we need. Reach out to book an appointment – we are here to help.
