Understanding Your Pet's Vaccines
Not all vaccines are the same. Here is what the two categories mean.
Core Vaccines
Core vaccines are recommended for every dog or cat, regardless of lifestyle. They protect against diseases that are widespread, highly contagious, life-threatening, or transmissible to humans (zoonotic).
- Dogs: Rabies, DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza)
- Cats: Rabies, FVRCP (Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia)
Lifestyle Vaccines
Lifestyle vaccines are recommended based on individual risk. A dog who frequents boarding facilities, hiking trails, or rural areas faces different exposures than a strictly indoor cat. Your veterinarian will help you determine which of these are right for your pet.
- Dogs: Bordetella, Leptospirosis, Lyme Disease, Canine Influenza
- Cats: FeLV (Feline Leukaemia Virus), Chlamydophila felis
